Impotence or Erectile
Dysfunction Facts and Fiction by HealthExpress
Impotence is a condition the
cause of which has been misunderstood by everyone ever since the condition
itself was identified. Even today both physicians and the public are not really
clear about what causes impotence. Medically referred to as Erectile Dysfunction
(ED), it is a condition that can affect a man at any stage in his life.
Studies have shown that a realistic assessment and understanding of the causes
of male impotence is necessary. If this is done, it would be possible to restore
sexual functioning in 80% to 90% of all cases of chronic erectile dysfunction.
In most cases there is an organic cause to impotence. However in a minority of
cases male impotence can also be associated with psychological difficulties like
stress and depression.
An erection is the result of a precise sequence of events involving nerve
impulses to the brain, spinal column, the area of the penis, the response of
muscles, fibrous tissues, veins and arteries in and near the corpora cavernous.
Damage or disruption of any of these events can become the cause for erectile
dysfunction. Among the most common causes of male impotence is damage to the
nerves, arteries, smooth muscles and fibrous tissues. The damage usually happens
due to diseases like kidney disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, alcoholism,
atherosclerosis, vascular disease and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's
disease.
More than 70% of all cases of erectile dysfunction are caused by these diseases.
Luckily for most of patients with impotence caused due to organic reasons,
remedies exist in the form of medications like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra as
well as the natural alternatives and treatments to these medications.
Among the drug related causes of impotence are included the side effects of
medications. Several commonly used medications such as those for high blood
pressure, antidepressants, antihistamines, tranquilizers, appetites suppressants
and various other prescription and over-the- counter medications can become a
cause of male impotence.
Even if the reason behind erectile dysfunction is psychological, which is a
common reality in today's fast paced and stressful life, Viagra and the other
treatments described above do work effectively to treat the condition. In
addition there are two more important but infamous causes of male impotence -
smoking and hormonal abnormalities. Smoking negatively affects blood flow in
veins and can be a direct cause for impotence. So it is advisable to give up
smoking, both for your general health and your sexual health.
The other reason for Male impotence or Erectile Dysfunction is hormonal
abnormalities such as low levels of testosterone. But this reason is not a very
big cause for concern because impotence treatments like Viagra can help relieve
it. Moreover medical science is already developing treatment that can assist in
increasing or producing higher levels of testosterone to naturally boost both
sexual desire and performance.
